Soft Iridescent — FAQs

What are Soft Iridescent colors made of and how do they work?

Our Soft Iridescent colors are made using natural mica, a mineral that plays a key role in creating their distinctive luminous and color-shifting effects.

Mica is a naturally occurring silicate mineral that is lightweight, transparent, and highly reflective. Its layered structure makes it an ideal base for iridescent pigments. Each mica particle is coated with extremely thin layers of metal oxides, which interact with light through a phenomenon known as light interference.

This effect is similar to what you see in soap bubbles or butterfly wings, where colors shift and shimmer depending on the angle of light. As light reflects off the different layers, it creates subtle variations in tone and a soft, luminous glow.

In our Soft Iridescent range, these properties are carefully balanced to produce a more delicate and refined effect. Rather than strong metallic finishes, these colors are designed to create a gentle shimmer that enhances your work while remaining harmonious with traditional watercolor techniques.

How should I use Soft Iridescent watercolors?

Soft Iridescent colors can be used in a variety of ways, depending on the effect you want to achieve.

They can be applied on their own for subtle, light-catching washes, or layered over other colors to introduce a soft shimmer and dimension. They work especially well as finishing touches—perfect for highlights, accents, or areas where you want light to interact with the surface of the painting.

For the best results, they are often applied over dry layers, allowing the iridescent particles to sit on the surface and reflect light more effectively. They can also be used selectively to enhance specific elements without overwhelming the composition.
